Weekly unemployment insurance claims rise
BATON ROUGE - First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Dec. 7 increased from the previous, holiday-shortened week's total.
The state labor department figures released Friday show the initial claims increased to 3,159 from 1,850 for the previous week, which was shortened by the Thanksgiving holiday.
For the comparable week a year earlier there were 3,516 initial claims.
The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, increased to 2,557 from the previous week's total of 2,444.
Continued unemployment claims claimed for the week ending Dec. 7 increased to 24,160 compared to 22,425 the previous week.
The four-week moving average for such claims increased to 22,957 from the previous week's average of 22,539.
