Weekend-long closure begins on Essen Lane
BATON ROUGE- Essen Lane closed Friday night at the railroad tracks near Perkins Road and will remain closed until Monday's morning rush.
The busy highway is open, but drivers can not cross the tracks. The closure is expected to end at 5 a.m. Monday. The rainy forecast is not expected to stop the closure, the state said Friday.
Crews are expanding the width of the crossing in anticipation of a widening project on Essen that could start before the end of the year.
Emergency crews have made plans to take the alternate route of Bluebonnet Blvd. through Summa to get around the closure, which impacts access to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
The widening project is still in the design phase but will expand Essen to three full travel lanes and some sort of center turn lane.
