GONZALES - An Ascension Parish judge handed down a life sentence today for a man convicted of kidnapping and rape who was featured on "America's Most Wanted".

Bobby Weatherton acted as his own attorney in the sentencing phase of the trial. He was convicted in March of beating and raping a woman he was giving a ride to back in 2007.

The woman escaped, and got help at a nearby plant. Weatherton turned himself in to authorities in Memphis, Tenn. after he was featured on "America's Most Wanted" in 2008.

Judge Alvin Turner gave Weatherton a life sentence the rape conviction, and a 40-year sentence for the kidnapping conviction, to run consecutively.
