WBRZ questions prompt promise to fix vet's yard

VENTRESS - The Pointe Coupee Parish Police Jury President promised to fix a Vietnam veteran's eroding yard, after News 2 started asking questions about the situation.

Lester Jeanpierre said he has complained about more than a half-dozen deep holes near his property for five years. A drainage culvert runs underneath the property, and deep holes have developed between the culvert and the land above. In some places, the holes are more than six feet deep.

Jeanpierre is worried someone will get hurt.

"Someone could walk in there and break a leg," Jeanpierre said.

The deep divots are scattered throughout the property. The erosion is so bad, his neighbor's house is beginning to develop deep holes under the foundation.

"The drainage is eating out the dirt from underneath us and it's going to cause a sinkhole,"Jeanpierre said.

Jeanpierre said he has complained to the Police Jury before. Crews have come out, but nothing has been done to permanently fix the problem.

Police Juror Ted Nelson claims the problem hasn't been fixed for a reason.

"Mr. Jeanpierre ran everyone off the property," Nelson said. "I can't fix it if you don't let me back on the property."

But Jeanpierre said he would never have told people to leave if someone was fixing something he was complaining about.

"He's not being truthful about what went down," Jeanpierre said.

When we confronted Nelson that Jeanpierre said he never told crews to leave, Nelson responded, "Well maybe he didn't."

News 2 contacted Police Jury President Melanie Bueche, who promised a fix would be coming by the end of next week. News 2 learned a load of dirt was also delivered to fill in the holes Wednesday.
