Sheriff Mike Cazes back at work after hospitalization
WEST BATON ROUGE - A week ago Sheriff Mike Cazes thought he had suffered a minor heart attack. But today, the Sheriff is back at work and said his tests show that wasn't the case.
On Wednesday, Cazes was greeted at a press conference with handshakes and hugs from everyone showing concern for his health. He told his doctors believe he suffered a very severe anxiety attack, not a heart attack.
"One thing you take for granted, is that you never know when that last moment might come," said Caze.
He credited his quick recovery to his doctor.
"This is the 9th stent that he has placed in me. I had open heart surgery right after Katrina with a double bypass," he said.
Even though his health issue wasn't as serious as previously thought, Cazes said it's motivating him to change.
"I plan on exercising. I plan on keeping my sodium intake down. They gave me several ideas that I will follow up on. I promised I'd quit smoking, and I haven't smoked, so that's one of the biggest goals.
Another goal for the sheriff is to tackle crime in West Baton Rouge.
"We're going to continue to enforce the laws on the interstate as far as drug seizures and making our parish safe. They elected me sheriff, they gave me the job. I'm going to continue to fight for them and make West Baton Rouge the safest place we can have," said Caze.
Cazes announced last October he planned to run for a third term.
