The National Weather Service has extended winter weather advisories until 6pm Friday Evening. Locations under the advisory include East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana, West Feliciana and Iberville Parishes as well as Wilkinson County. Additionally, Ascension, Livingston, St. Helena and Tangiphoa Parishes have been included along with Amite and Pike Counties.
As of 8:00am Friday, reports and WBRZ viewer photos confirmed times of light snow overnight for locations along and north of I-10/12. Even some light accumulations have occured in Southern Mississippi and the Florida Parishes.
Also ongoing was a round of sleet and freezing rain causing major road closures such as portions of Interstates 10,12 and 110.
The winter weather advisory has been extended due to the icy conditions that are now expected to persist into the afternoon.
Morning weather balloon soundings indicated a shallow layer of warm air just above the surface, while the ground temperatures itself is in the upper 20s in most locations. This means snow will fall into that warm layer, melt, reach the ground as rain and freeze on contact. Where the surface freezing layer is just a bit deeper, melted droplets will freeze and sleet will occur. With radar still indicating precipitation scattered about the region, areas along and south of I-10/12 can expect sleet and freezing rain to continue. North of that line, some light snow may continue to mix in with minor accumulations possible.
Into Friday Morning, forecast models have done a very poor job of resolving this storm, a trend that has continued from earlier this week. While Thursday Night, all indications were that precipitation would end by dawn, now models are keeping a light wintry mix in the area through middle afternoon.
Beyond any precipiation, very cold temperatures are expected as highs don't escape the 30s today and overnight lows go back into the 20.
