NEW ORLEANS - Former New Orleans Saint and LSU running back Hokie Gajan died Monday night following a battle with cancer, WWL-TV reports.

Gajan also spent time as a scout and radio broadcaster and color analyst for the Saints. He was 56-years-old.

Earlier Monday, Gajan was placed in intensive care as his condition deteriorated. He first announced he had cancer in November, later disclosing that it was a rare form of cancer called liposarcoma. The cancer forms in deep, soft tissue cells in the limbs or stomach and often spreads to other parts of the body.

He played for LSU before being drafted in the 10th round by the Saints in 1981. He played in the NFL for 5 seasons.

Gajan was a native of Baker and attended Baker High School.

Funeral arrangements haven't been announced.
