NAPOLEONVILLE - The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office said a 10-year-old boy drowned in Bayou Lafourche Friday.

They said he was fishing with his friends when two of the boys decided to jump in the water from a footbridge.

The victim, who could swim, came up once and showed distress before going back under. He was found about 20 feet away from where he jumped in in 6 to 7 feet of water.

Residents in Napoleonville said the 10-year-old's death hits hard.

"It's going to take time and I'm sure the family is going to mourn for quite some time. It's just a tragedy," said Chad Evans.

Because of the tragedy, leaders are considering posting warning sings.

"We do issue warnings throughout the parish. It's very unsafe," said Capt. Bruce Prejean.

The sheriff's office plans to offer assistance to the other three boys to help who were involved.
