Warehouse fire almost out, evacuation still in effect
Update: Louisiana State Police are saying the warehouse fire on Eden Church Road is “technically out.”
Fire departments from Livingston, East Baton Rouge and Ascension Parishes were called to Coco Resources on Eden Church Road in Denham Springs. The fire then spread to the neighboring ITT Processors. The fire at a chemical storage facility has continued to burn for almost eight hours.
Though the fire is dying down, troopers say it is still a hazardous situation.
An evacuation order is still in effect for about 200 people. LSP and firefighters are still concerned with some containers that are on scene that are still hot and under pressure. Troopers say they will re-assess the situation in the morning. They will try to identify some of the chemicals involved to make sure it is safe for the public to return to their homes.
Smoke could be seen from downtown Baton Rouge. Many people in the area captured fireballs and explosions from the warehouse on their cell phones.
No one was hurt. Investigators say the massive black cloud is not toxic.
