WALKER - Fines dating back to 1996 will are finally coming due for people who owe the city of Walker money.

Court costs, fines, citation fees and more, long ignored by people across the country, will be the focus of American Municipal Services' contract with Walker, to help them collect more than $800,000 in money owed.

"Whatever we are owed by the individual, we would recover 100 percent of that and according to the contract that we signed with them, they'd recover up to 30 percent over, they can negotiate that down, but they can't negotiate the amount down that the city of Walker is owed," said Mayor Rick Ramsey.

The collections will start today, and Ramsey says the company has a high success rate in collecting fines that are only a few years old.

"The older the debt is, the less likely we will collect, but they'll continue to pursue that, because they have the resources that we don't, the ability to find people," said Ramsey.

The money collected will be used on one time projects, like upgrades and improvements to the courthouse and police department.
