WALKER – Workers will soon get started on million dollar improvements to Walker High School later this month.

Officials are set to break ground on a $25 million capital improvement during a ceremony on June 27. The construction is part of a plan approved by voters in 2014.

Walker School Board Member Jimmy Watson said Monday’s groundbreaking marks the official start of the biggest components of the plan.

“We are excited about this new school and the positive influence it will have on learning for years to come,” Watson said.

Workers will soon start work on an 80,000 square foot, two-story building with 32 classrooms, a library, teacher workroom and offices. The building will face Florida Boulevard and will create a new front entrance to the school.

In addition to the new building, there are plans for a new cafeteria and seating for 600-800 students, a band room and a 16,000 square foot vocational technical education building.

“We know that students are coming here for a great education, and this expansion and improvement plan will allow us to continue to meet that demand,” Watson said.

The cost of the new construction projects is estimated to be just over $23 million. Construction is expected to be completed at the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
