BATON ROUGE – Voters approved a property tax that would create more money for the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging.

In a close vote, the measure was passed with 90,791 votes (51 percent).

The tax would be a 2.25 mill property tax for 10 years that would create more than $7 million annually to operate the organization's programs that assists the elderly. Programs that would benefit from the tax are programs such as Meals on Wheels, wellness programs and personal care assistance programs.

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved in May to adding the proposed property tax to the ballot.

The Council on Aging ended last year with around $200,000 in the red for operating funds.
