BATON ROUGE - In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a group of 3,000 volunteers made up of more than 200 organizations spent their time cleaning up neighborhoods.

Baton Rouge Delta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority lead the 2nd Annual MLK Day of Service. The day focused on building community and strengthening partnerships between organizations in the 70805 ZIP code.

The day of service provided renovations to a number of homes and schools, removing debris and painting, to stop further vandalism and decrease serious crime.

"Citizens of all walks of life, doesn't matter about your income, it doesn't matter about your race or ethnicity," says President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Doris Brown. "We're here together to improve Baton Rouge and to make a difference in our community."

Volunteers like Annette Lowery are grateful for a day like today.

"It's good to give back," said Lowery. "Let's go be out in the community, helping out."
