Volunteer group aims to ease hurricane evacuations
NEW ORLEANS- As New Orleans heads into the peak of hurricane season, an all-volunteer group is geared up to help ease the evacuation process for those who don't have their own transportation out of town.
Evacuteer.org is in its third hurricane season. The volunteer group was founded by photographer Robert Fogarty, who was an Americorps volunteer working at New Orleans City Hall when Hurricane Gustav prompted an evacuation in 2008. Fogarty recalls that there were numerous volunteers on hand but no plan to use them efficiently.
With a space at the city's emergency operations center, Evacuteer.org prepares volunteers for a variety of roles. They include disseminating information to phone callers about evacuation aid and lending a hand at evacuation pick-up points.
