Vitter offshore drilling bill blocked
The Senate voted to block a bill by Republican David Vitter of Louisiana which would have kept in place a plan from the Bush administration to allow oil and gas drilling along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
Vitter's bill would have stopped the Obama administration from pursuing its own policy on offshore drilling.
The vote was 56-to-42. Last year, Republicans sought some momentum to advocate new offshore drilling with gasoline prices soaring.
