VIDEO: Explorers get close encounter with sperm whale off Louisiana coast
NEW ORLEANS - A crew exploring the Gulf of Mexico near Louisiana had a rare glimpse of life under the sea this week when a curious sperm whale swam up to their underwater probes.
Underwater cameras caught the entire exchange Tuesday between the whale and the remote-operated vehicles, or ROVs, used by the Nautilus Exploration Program.
After drifting into view the whale circled one of the ROVs a few times. It came close enough that scientists said they thought they saw marks on the whale's nose which could have been caused by a boat's propeller.
The Nautilus has been exploring the ocean floor in the Gulf of Mexico since June 2013. You can find out more about the expedition and watch live streams of the ROVs' missions on their Facebook page.
