Vidalia murder suspect arrested in Texas
Update: Police say Michael Kelly Stevens was arrested in Channelview, Texas for the murder of Michael Welch in Vidalia. Harris County deputies booked Stevens with evading detention or arrest after he allegedly jumped in the Houston ship channel and attempted to swim away.
Vidalia police are looking for convicted sex offender Michael Kelly Stevens and think he may have fled to southern Louisiana.
Stevens, 41, is suspected of killing Michael Welch, whose body was found Oct. 4. He may have been dead for three days. Police are withholding the cause of death until an autopsy is complete.
Police say Stevens lived with Welch in recent months. They think Stevens stole Welch's truck, a silver 2006 Chevy Silverado with the Louisiana license plate, number W746162. Stevens is 6 feet 1 inch tall with brown hair and blue eyes.
Stevens was convicted in Texas in 1987 of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old boy. More recently, he was convicted in Concordia Parish of indecent behavior with a 5-year-old girl in 2005.
