Victims names released in crash involving school bus
ST. MARY PARISH - A collision between a school bus and an SUV ends with four dead.
A tire blow out on the SUV which caused it to cross the median on Highway 90 in St. Mary Parish hitting a Lafayette Parish School Bus carrying the Lafayette High School baseball team.
State police say the four people who were killed, 6-year-old Destiny Cheatham, 14-year-old Dwayne Escort and 16-year-old Marcus Cheatham and 36-year-old Ladonna Cheatham, were ejected from the vehicle. None of them had their seatbelts on and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The only passenger in the vehicle, 17-year-old Mark Chatham was restrained and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Troopers say the bus was carrying 30 students and 5 adults. One coach from the team, 23-year-old Cody Ortego, was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries. Seven of the students were treated for minor injures. Those hurt in the crash were transported to hospitals in New Iberia, Lafayette, Thibodeaux and Baton Rouge.
