Victim, suspect identified in deadly mall shooting
GRETNA - Authorities identified the suspected gunman and victim in a deadly mall shooting late Wednesday.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies said James Vaughn, 24, was shot and killed by Gary M François, 25, at a shoe store inside the Oakwood shopping center on the Westbank of New Orleans. François was taken into custody shortly after the incident at about 4 p.m. On Christmas Eve.
"[The victim] had turned away from the cash register and started walking away, when the perpetrator walked up to about 3 to 4 feet from him. We believe at this point in time there were three shots fired," Sheriff Newell Normand said.
According to WWL TV, a New Orleans-area TV station and news-partner with WBRZ TV and WBRZ.com, the mall was quickly shutdown, shoppers were asked to evacuate and the alleged gunman was eventually chased down by possibly an off-duty law enforcement officer.
"Everybody wants to be with their families for Christmas. It's sad, it makes me want to cry," a witness told the TV station.
