Victim's mother calls Duheart conviction "bittersweet"
DENHAM SPRINGS- Three years after the murder of her son, Trudy Fourmy said the conviction of Denako Duheart in a different case is bittersweet for her.
Fourmy's son, Jason, was found dead on Halloween 2007. Duheart, his brother and another man were charged in the murder but the case was dropped in 2009 after three witnesses were killed.
Thursday in Baton Rouge Duheart was convicted of attempted murder for the shooting of Julius Collins in November of 2009. Collins and a relative testified on tape to preserve their witness testimony, but also testified in court against Duheart.
District Attorney Hillar Moore commended the bravery shown by the witnesses to testify despite the history of witnesses being murdered. He said without their testimony, charging Duheart would have been difficult.
Duheart's mother was arrested for witness tampering in December of 2009. He will be sentenced in February and could get up to 50 years behind bars.
