"Veterans - Thank-You..."
We salute our Veterans with examples of those that served, died, sacrificed and embraced their duty for our country. This day is celebrated on the same day as the Armistice signing, ending World War I at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, the 11th month. A World War II veteran, Sverre Pettersen, championed an effort, against opposition, to postpone the D-Day invasion until June 6. His forecast averted a disaster caused by landing in high winds and waves. The gale-force winds on June 5th decreased to imitate the landing. As noted in a previous column, additional accounts are in his book, "Weathering the Storm," including rumors that the Army Air Corps' team saved the day as the British forecasters strongly disagreed with his projections.
