LEESVILLE - A Vernon Parish sheriff's deputy has died after he lost control of his car and crashed in a construction zone on Louisiana Highway 8 east of the Calcasieu Loop.

Authorities say 54-year-old Steven Netherland, a retired state trooper, crashed early Monday. Netherland lost control and crossed the centerline. Afterward, investigators say his car went off the left side of the road and collided with two dirt compactors and a large roadway stabilizer.

State police say Netherland was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology tests are pending.

Netherland was a state trooper for more than 22 years before his retirement and had been working for the sheriff's Civil Division for about a year.
