PRAIRIEVILLE - A head-on collision between a van and an 18-wheeler this morning has nearly shut down I-10 westbound near Prairieville.
According to State Police, the driver of the van was critically injured when he drove across the median and into the path of the 18-wheeler, hitting it head-on. The driver of the truck saw the van crossing the median and slowed down, but could not avoid hitting it.
Trooper Russell Graham said the driver of the van had an undisclosed medical condition, and was transported by ambulance to a Baton Rouge hospital. The truck driver was not injured.
The truck is carrying a hazardous chemical, but Graham said no leak had been detected and only the frame holding the tank was damaged.
Right now, traffic is being allowed past on the shoulder at the accident site. Graham said the interstate should be fully open again before noon.
