KABUL, Afghanistan- U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan are remembering their fallen comrades on this Memorial Day.

They prayed and held flag-raising ceremonies at dawn today to recognize the more than 1,400 killed in combat since the nearly decade-old war began.

Brig. Gen. Lewis Craparotta, who spoke at a ceremony, said although those who've died should be remembered, those who are still serving also should be honored. He says, "They are committed to something greater than themselves and they muster the physical and moral courage to accomplish extraordinary feats in battle."

In Iraq, more than 4,400 U.S. have died in combat. About 46,000 are still stationed there, though officials say combat operations are now over.

Under an agreement between Washington and Baghdad, U.S. troops must leave Iraq by Dec. 31.
