U.S. 61 in St. Francisville is expected to be shut down until after 7 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police Troop A.
Officials said the time will allow crews to move the concentrated chlorine from the overturned 18-wheeler into another tanker. Then the truck will be righted and moved off the road by a wrecker.
The highway was shut down in the early afternoon in front of McDonald's in the city limits when the truck overturned and concentrated bleach began to leak from the tank. A few homes in the area had to be evacuated due to the strong odor, according to West Feliciana Sheriff Austin Daniels.
Traffic was diverted off of U.S. 61 onto side streets.
