BATON ROUGE - Baton Rouge police are still trying to determine who shot a man in the Melrose East area Monday night.

It happened in the 1000 block of North Donmoor.

The 22-year-old victim was hit in the head.

He's hospitalized in extremely critical condition.

Investigators say it began when a pair of store owners saw a person they believe had stolen from their store standing with a group of people.

The store owners apparently approached the person, had words with him then got in their car to leave.

They say someone in the group shot at them and they returned fire.

The person hit was not involved in the confrontation.

Police are still trying to determine who fired that shot.
