COLUMBIA – After historic flooding ravaged South Carolina, and a USC home game was moved to Baton Rouge, the Golden Band from Tigerland learned their SEC rival’s fight alma mater and fight song.

Former LSU Director of Bands Roy King said the gesture portrayed the one of the many symbols of an SEC family.

“I’m quite certain the South Carolina folks would do the same thing for us if the tables were turned.” King said.

He was right.

The University of South Carolina shared a video Saturday of the Carolina Band, the “Mighty Sounds of the Southeast,” playing the LSU alma mater.

The video shows the band, along with the university’s flag team, standing in traditional LSU pre-game formation. Some members even had “LSU” painted on their cheeks. The video ends with a message, “Together. Gamecocks helping #LAflood.”

In October, heavy rains caused historic 500-year floods across the eastern coast of the United States. South Carolina was hit the hardest. At least 19 people were killed, and some areas of the state received enough rain to equal a 1-in-1000 year event.

This week, historic flooding battered much of south Louisiana. At least 13 people were killed and state officials say 60,000 or more homes were damaged by flooding.

News of the storm recalled similar memories for the Gamecock nation.

“LSU was so gracious to assist us in our time of need,” USC President Harris Pastides said. “Now it is our turn to help our SEC friend.”

Just like LSU did in the fall, USC collected supplies – including water, food and cleaning supplies – to send to a rebuilding south Louisiana. USC put out a call for diapers, baby formula, canned foods, snacks, socks and underwear.

The request was delivered.

Saturday, two USC athletics equipment trucks pulled into Tiger Stadium before being unloaded at the Salvation Army victim distribution center at the Cortana Mall.
