Ultra-light plane crashes in soybean field
SHREVEPORT - A two-seater ultralight plane crashed into a soybean field in north Caddo Parish.
The sheriff's office says the incident happened Saturday just before 8 p.m. after taking off from a private farm.
Cpl. Mike Vaitkus says the plane had been experiencing mechanical issues for most of the day and the pilot and a passenger decided to take it up for a flight.
He says the plane's engine failed, and as the pilot was gliding down for an emergency landing, he apparently misjudged power lines. The landing gear caught the lines, sending the plane into a spin and it nose-dived into a soybean field.
The pilot sustained moderate injuries to his legs and was taken to LSU Hospital. The passenger was not injured.
