GONZALES – A two-year-old child is not expected to survive injuries that sent her godparents to jail for attempted murder, according to authorities in Ascension Parish.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested 28-year-old Shantell Donahue and 27-year-old Terrell Donahue after interviewing them about severe head and abdomen injuries the child, Jaylynn Muse, sustained over the weekend.

Authorities say the girl’s godparents found her unresponsive Sunday morning and rushed her to a Baton Rouge hospital.  Doctors found Jaylynn was bleeding from the brain and had obvious abdominal bruises, and had to do emergency surgery.

Investigators were told today the girl was taken off life support and not expected to survive.

In interviews with juvenile detectives, Shantell and Terrell Donahue told conflicting stories about how Jaylynn was hurt.  Shantell claimed Terrell had punched her several times when they were watching TV Saturday night and Jaylynn began whining and then screaming; Terrell claimed Shantell had hit Jaylynn when she became aggravated with her, and that he may have hit her also.

Both were arrested in suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and booked into the parish jail.  Investigators say if Jaylynn doesn’t survive they will upgrade the charges to second-degree murder.
