COVINGTON – State Police say a two-year-old was killed in a three-vehicle collision this morning in St. Tammany Parish.
Investigators said the crash happened at 7:55 a.m. on LA 437 when a car with the child in it stopped to make a left-hand turn. Investigators said a dump truck in the same lane didn’t see the car stop and hit its rear bumper, pushing it into the oncoming lane where a pickup hit its passenger side.
24-year-old Sarah Givens of Covington was driving the car with the child in it, and was flown to a New Orleans hospital with serious injuries. The two-year-old, Mason Givens, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, while the dump truck driver had no injuries from the crash. All parties were properly restrained with seat belts, according to State Police.
The dump truck driver, 63-year-old Harry Lawrence Jr., was booked into the St. Tammany Parish jail in suspicion of careless operation of a vehicle, negligent injury and negligent homicide.
Alcohol use is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash, but blood samples from the drivers are being tested at the LSP Crime Lab.
