GRAND CHENIER, La. - Two 19-year-olds were found clinging to a partially capsized boat near an oil rig 11.5 miles off the Louisiana coast Wednesday morning.

According to a KATC-TV report, Derek Romero, pictured in teal, died at a hospital in Cameron Parish after being rescued.

The name of the other boater has not been released, but the Coast Guard tweeted a picture of the pair when the agency announced the rescue earlier in the day.  Romero was from New Iberia.  His boating partner was from St. Martin Parish.

The pair left from the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge early Tuesday morning for a fishing trip in an aluminum boat with a 70-horsepower motor but did not return. The search for the pair started Tuesday evening and lasted overnight until they were found Wednesday. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries used two boats and two airplanes. The U.S. Coast Guard also had a similar search operation going, officials said.

The pair needed medical attention and were transported to an area of the Gulf where a medical helicopter picked them up and flew them to a hospital near Lake Charles.
