Two people died and several were injured in early-morning accidents around the area.

Louisiana State Police say 21-year-old Benjamin J. Moreno of Covington was killed and his four passengers injured after his Honda Civic ran off the road. Investigators said he was heading east on U. S. 190 near the border of St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parish when he lost control of his vehicle, hitting several trees before the car came to a stop.

Moreno’s four passengers were also injured; the three backseat passengers were not wearing seatbelts and one, 20-year-old Robert Trevino of Covington, was flown to University Hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries.

Later that morning, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies were called to a crash at the intersection of Highway 964 and Heck Young. They said 48-year-old Patrick Jones of Baker was going west on Heck Young when his vehicle left the road and hit a ditch embankment. Responders to the scene found Jones trapped inside the vehicle, and said he died shortly after being extracted.

Both accidents are still under investigation.
