Two arrested in Port Allen implicated in Fla. murder
PORT ALLEN - Authorities say one of two men arrested after a high-speed chase this morning in Port Allen has confessed to killing an elderly woman in Florida.
West Baton Rouge Sheriff Mike Cazes said the man had been taken to a local hospital after deputies learned he'd overdosed on some kind of pills. Once there, Cazes said the man told deputies he had killed an elderly woman in Port Orange, Fla. and stolen her car.
The discovery came after deputies tried to pull over the car on I-10 near Lobdell early this morning and the men took off. The car wrecked at a dead end just off the Grosse Tete exit, and when deputies found a wallet in the car that didn't belong to they men they started asking about the car's owner.
After they were told about the murder investigators contacted Port Orange Police. A spokesperson for that department said officers found the woman dead inside her home, along with a severely-injured woman in her mid-20's upstairs. She was taken to a nearby hospital and is in surgery.
Sheriff Cazes said investigators from Florida were coming to interview the two suspects, and afterwards they would be booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish jail on a multitude of charges.
