BATON ROUGE - Jurors quickly found Lee Turner Jr., who is accused of killing two coworkers in order to steal a deposit from their business, guilty of first-degree murder Monday in Baton Rouge.

The jurors received their instructions before lunch, and said they'd reached a decision just after 1 p.m. The decision means Turner could be eligible for the death penalty, and the sentencing phase of the trial could begin as early as Tuesday.

In closing arguments Turner's attorneys did not try to put doubt on the 25-year-old's responsibility for the shootings. Instead they told jurors he was not the cold-blooded killer prosecutors claimed he was, saying he was not a Derrick Todd Lee or a school shooter.

Prosecutor Tracey Barbera countered by saying that's exactly what Turner was, that for the victims' families "this is their Sandy Hook. This is their Boston Marathon bombing."

Investigators said in 2011 Turner shot and killed Edward Gurtner and Randy Chaney at the CarQuest Auto Parts Store in Baton Rouge. Detectives said they found bank bags and deposit slips from the business behind Turner's apartment, and that he confessed after an 11-hour interrogation.
