Tuna tag and release program
BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries plans to promote a program to catch, tag and release yellowfin tuna among sport fishermen.
The department says the tagging program is meant to help scientists collect the data they need to better understand the behaviors of yellowfin tuna.
LDWF plans to kick off the program with a tag-and-release tournament at Venice Marina on Saturday, September 24.
A $5,000 prize will be awarded to the chartered boat with the most tagged
Tagging can help scientists learn about the migrations, stock structure, population sizes and other behaviors of tuna.
Fisheries officials say yellowfin tuna have been declining in size and
numbers since 1999.
