NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University in New Orleans accidentally sent 130 acceptance emails to prospective students on Wednesday afternoon.

Jeff Schiffman, the university's senior associate director of admissions, posted about what happened, stating that the mistake goes against the "ideas of compassion" and that the university "really messed this one up."

"For a few hours, they had notification from Tulane that they had been admitted before we sent a email to let them know we did not have a final decision and to disregard the tech services email," Schiffman wrote.

A Tulane spokesman told WWL, WBRZ's sister station, that the mistake stemmed from a technical glitch when the university's technology team was switching software systems.

The correct acceptance emails were sent to students on Thursday at midnight.

According to Schiffman, the 130 students who mistakenly received the emails were Early Decision applicants and final decisions regarding their admission had not been made by the university yet.

Schiffman said that many people have stated to allow the 130 students to be admitted as "it's the right thing to do," however it can not be done.

"But admitting an additional 130 students is much easier said than done and greatly throws off the size of the class. It simply can't be done," he wrote.

Schiffman wrote that the university offers their deepest apologies and that the mistake is "inexcusable."

"Tulane can do better and we will," he wrote.
