Tulane student slain in murder-suicide
NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Police Department is investigating the murder of a 25-year-old woman and the suicide of a 28-year-old man.
Around 9:55 a.m. Sunday, police said they were called out to the 5500 block of Willow Street in the uptown area of New Orleans. When the officers arrived at the scene, a roommate advised that he walked inside of the house and saw they had been shot.
Detectives say 28-year-old Wajih Mazloum man fatally shot his girlfriend, 25-year-old Sara LaMont, and then fatally shot himself. They also found a handgun next to the man.
Tulane University released a statement saying Mazloum and LaMont are both second-year law students.
The university says it's in touch with the families and that "thoughts and prayers go out to them."
Today's devastating news comes as we are struggling with a number of earlier losses in the Tulane community during what has been an extraordinarily difficult year," reads a statement from the university. "As we confront the tragedies that have befallen us over the last few months, our hope lies in coming together in support, understanding, care and love for one another. I pledge to you that no effort will be spared by me or anyone in the university's leadership as we seek the comfort and healing of our community."
The coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
