Truck plunges into lake, partially closes Causeway
NEW ORLEANS - Northbound Causeway lanes have reopened after a pickup plunged into Lake Pontchartrain.
Causeway Police say the bridge closed in both directions at about 4 p.m. and the northbound lanes reopened at about 4:40 p.m.
Southbound lanes remain closed.
The bridge's general manager, Carlton Dufrechou, says the vehicle was traveling southbound and is about three miles off the shore. Causeway police say it went over the rail about 4 p.m.
WDSU-TV reports a witness told investigators a black pickup was headed south and went over the rail. The witness says the truck didn't have any other vehicles around it at the time it went over the railing.
Dufrechou tells WWL-TV that emergency crews are on the scene and a rescue effort is underway.
