The Atlantic Hurricane doesn't end until Nov. 30 and today we were reminded of that. An area of low pressure over the southwestern Caribbean Sea strengthened to a tropical storm this afternoon. This latest system is named Ida and it is the ninth named storm in the Atlantic basin this season.
We will need to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Ida as it is forecast to move north over the next five days. This storm will drift over Nicaragua and Honduras over the weekend and then re-emerge back out into the Caribbean Sea on Monday. All of the long range models agree that Ida will continue to move northward early next week. There is some uncertainty, however, as to whether it will push northeastward into Cuba, toward the northwest into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula or head directly north into the Gulf of Mexico.
The state of Louisiana has never been hit by a hurricane during the month of November. Let's hope it stays that way!
Elsewhere the weather remains quiet throughout the Tropical Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico and tropical cyclone formation is not expected through Tuesday. Click here for more information from the National Hurricane Center.
