ST. AMANT - Two children are dead this morning after their mother's car ran off the highway and into a nearby bayou.
Louisiana State Police say 28-year-old Raelyn Encalade was driving along Stringer Bridge Rd. with four young passengers around 10 p.m. Tuesday when her car suddenly ran off the road and landed in the bayou.
Troppers say Encalade and two of the children, ages 9 and 6, managed to escape and made their way to safety with the help of a Good Samaritan.
However, the other two children were trapped.
Troopers say three Ascension Parish Sheriff's deputies and a group of local volunteer firefighters swam into the bayou to try and rescue the children, but could not get inside the vehicle in time.
Officials have identified the victims as 9-year-old Faith Encalade and 7-year-old Patience Encalade.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
