HAMMOND, La.- A traffic stop on Interstate 12 has resulted in the arrest of a fugitive from Florida.

Louisiana State Police say 33-year-old James Watkins, of Brooksville, Fla., was stopped about 4:30 p.m. Friday near the Tangipahoa-Livingston parish line after troopers received an alert to be on the lookout for a 2001 Kia Sephia. Watkins is wanted in Florida for the suspected sexual battery of a child under 12.

A registered sex offender, Watkins was serving probation and had fled the state after the alleged rape.

State police say U.S. Marshals, through their investigation, learned that Watkins was traveling on Interstate 10 and was suspected of trying to cross into Mexico.

State police say Watkins was arrested without incident and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish jail, where he's awaiting extradition to Florida.
