Tree destroys home as storms move through Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE - An elderly Baton Rouge couple is safe after a tree knocked down in this afternoon's storms fell on their house, nearly demolishing it and trapping them inside.
The couple were inside their home near the intersection of Kentucky and Harris Streets when the tree fell, but were rescued by firefighters and unharmed.
The afternoon storms knocked out power to thousands of people in south Louisiana, mostly in East Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee, and East and West Feliciana Parishes.
Crews with the St. George Fire Department also responded to a house fire on Ruston Drive in Baker that witnesses said was started by lightning. A spokesperson couldn't confirm whether lightning was the cause of the fire or not.
