Traveler arrested in enormous heroin bust on I-12
BATON ROUGE- A 26-year-old man was arrested after deputies said they found him transporting 15 pounds of heroin stuffed inside fire extinguishers in the luggage area of a bus.
Juan Vasquez was charged with possession with intent to distribute and distribution of schedule 1 heroin. Vasquez is from McAllen, Texas.
Deputies said a narcotics agent with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office noticed a bus fail to signal. The deputy stopped the bus and was given permission to search the luggage compartment. A K-9, named Jumma, found the drugs.
The drugs were worth about $640,000.
"It is imperative that we get Heroin off our streets in East Baton Rouge Parish," Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. "Too many young people are dying from this dangerous drug."
More than two-dozen people have died from heroin overdoses.
