PORT ALLEN- After a rate increase on Wednesday, Mayor Roger Bergeron noticed the cost of trash pickup would put a significant dent in the city's budget, to the tune of nearly $320,000.

"For some time now, the city has been subsidizing the recycling portion of the garbage contract and it's creating quite a deficit for us," said Bergeron.

But the city doesn't want to cut recycling, instead they'll consider raising the price for customers or cutting services to once a week pickup.

"I don't think they need to raise the price, I think once a week would be fine, they don't have much garbage anyway, so I think they'd be able to make that adjustment by picking up once a week," said Marlene Benedetto, who's mother barely fills her garbage can once a week.

Other folks aren't willing to give up recycling pick up and would rather cut trash to accommodate.

"Every Thursday night, you come home and you can just look down the street and everyone has a bin and it's full and it's overflowing, and I find that we put more stuff into our recycle bin than our trash," said Amanda Altazan, who live in Port Allen.

The mayor says he'll wait on collection data from the garbage company before making any suggestions on how to go forward; though, he says the company is willing to renegotiate the city's contract.
