BATON ROUGE - State traffic officials are monitoring potential flooding that may come as a result of the high water levels of the Mississippi River and Red River.

LA DOTD said they’re actively monitoring the situation, and they have resources prepared in the event flooding occurs. Motorists are reminded to avoid driving in standing or running water.

Traffic officials note that because of possible high water and the associated road closures, motorists are encouraged to check the status of road conditions before they begin their commutes by taking advantage of the latest information available.

LA DOTD says up-to-date road closures and condition info can be gathered via the following channels:

-MyDOTD: Motorists can receive automatic and up-to-date information on local projects, lane and road closures, and other DOTD activity by signing up for MyDOTD at www.dotd.la.gov.
-511 Traveler Information: Travelers can also find information regarding road closures by visiting the 511 Traveler Information website at www.511la.org or by dialing 511 from their telephone and saying the route or region about which they are seeking information. Out-of-state travelers can access the system by calling 1-888-ROAD-511 (1-888-762-3511).
-Way to Geaux smartphone application: The app can be downloaded on any iPhone or Android device by visiting either the iTunes App Store, or Google Play.

As is standard with any rainfall event, LA DOTD encourages drivers to slow down and avoid distractions. They encourage commuters to allow extra driving time and say extra room should be maintained vehicles during wet conditions. Speeds should be reduced when visibility is low.
