GONZALES - The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Friday evening for several parishes south and east of Baton Rouge.

Forecasters said the watch covers Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John and Terrbonne parishes until 8 p.m.

A tornado watch indicates favorable conditions exist to produce severe thunderstorms which are capable of producing tornadoes.

If a tornado warning is issued, people in the affected areas should stay indoors or find a safe place to wait for the warning to pass.

Pat Shingleton will have updates on WBRZ all evening and on the WBRZ Weather Twitter account.
