Tornado touches down in Iberville Parish
PLAQUEMINE - A tornado was caught on tape in Iberville Parish just outside of Plaquemine this morning.
Employees at SNF Flopam say they're lucky to be alive after the twister damaged the plant near Ella Road around 7:30 a.m.
Surveillance cameras at Flopam captured the twister as it moved across the plant's property. Workers at the plant were alerted of a possible tornado, and took shelter immediately. Workers were shaken but not hurt, and the storm did some damage to the building and roof.
"We realized it was real once the door swung open and started to pull things out of the building," said Leonard Reed.
Plant officials say the workers were warned by alerts.
"It sounded like a freight train very loud and they sheltered in place and it passed very quickly," said Paul West.
The National Weather Service will be at the plant tomorrow to survey the damage and classify the tornado.
Another tornado was reported in Saint Martin Parish. No one was injured there.
