NEW ORLEANS - The state's richest man just keeps getting richer.

Tom Benson climbed almost 200 places to become the 810th richest person in the world, Forbes reported in its annual "World's Billionaires" listing. Benson is the 288th richest person in the United States.

The magazine reported his net worth is about $2.2 billion, up from $1.9 billion in 2016. In 2014, the magazine listed his worth at $1.5 billion.

Benson, 88, owns the New Orleans Saints football team and Pelicans NBA team.

The magazine dusted off its biography of Benson, writing Benson built his fortune by "funneling his earnings into a steady procession of auto dealerships, local banks and sports teams."

Benson is in a legal dispute between his wife of ten years, Gayle, and his children and grandchildren.
