Tom Benson got even richer
BATON ROUGE - Tom Benson seems to have become even wealthier in the last few years.
Monday, Forbes released its annual ranking of the richest people in the world. Benson was on it, of course, and is the lone representative from Louisiana.
Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints football team and Pelicans NBA team, was listed as the 1,006th wealthiest person on Earth and the 351st in the United States.
"Louisiana car salesman Tom Benson built his fortune by funneling his earnings into a steady procession of auto dealerships, local banks and sports teams. Benson's biggest asset, the New Orleans Saints football club, is worth $1.1 billion; it is one of the NFL's more profitable teams despite their small market," the magazine reported on its website.
Benson, 87, is worth about $1.9 billion. In 2014, the magazine listed his worth at $1.5 billion.
Benson is in a family feud over his decision to cut certain family members from his business. The fight as escalated into a series of lawsuits that question his mental stability.
Benson lives in New Orleans.
