Tolls suspended as Grand Isle evacuated
NEW ORLEANS - State transportation officials suspended toll operations along La. 1 today to help residents quickly evacuate Grand Isle ahead of Tropical Storm Karen.
Grand Isle's mayor upgraded a voluntary evacuation order of the barrier island to a mandatory evacuation Friday. In response, the Department of Transportation and Development stopped toll operations at La. 1 in Leeville to help with the evacuation and emergency services.
Karen was weakening but still ready to become the first named storm to hit the U.S. in what has been a quiet hurricane season.
National Hurricane Center forecasters expect Karen to be near the central Gulf Coast on Saturday as a weak hurricane or tropical storm.
A hurricane watch stretched from Grand Isle to west of Destin, Fla. A tropical storm warning was in effect for Morgan City, La., to the mouth of the Pearl River.
